EEE 901 Linux version

Very exciting today as my new eee 901 has arrived. Suzy's had the Windows version for a week now, but I wanted to hold out for the Linux version. Not just for the extra few gigs storage space - but so I can run my favourite KDE desktop.

I've got the full KDE experience now, after following the instructions here to replace the 'easy mode desktop' with a full Xandros KDE desktop. I'm used to Kubuntu, but there seems to be little difference, except I've not yet found the setting to replace the horrid Xandros Launch button with the correct KDE launcher icon.

Now I'm off to install Apache, PHP, MySQL so I can have a mini portable Drupal development environment.

P.s. after typing this I've almost got used to typing on a miniature keyboard. The tricky bit is getting used to the small enter key.

I got the WinXP version,

I got the WinXP version, because I just *gotsta* have it before we went to Szeged. I was glad I did, but I spent some time rejigging the unit to get Pro on it.

Now, of course, I desperately want to switch to Linux, and have this unit to play with (read: break) whilst I learn. I would be interested in any tips/guides/tuts you know of to get a (K)Ubuntu system up and running.

PS, how are you fixed for drive space on the main partition...? My XP one is streamlined but still nearly full after just a few apps!

Hi Nik,

I tired a couple of distros, but would recommend trying to get Debian for eee installed as that seemed to be the most supported:

A couple of the hot-keys don't work, and I never got around to fixing the OSD for the brightness/volume keys - but I don't really use them. Lots of info here, if you've not found this yet check it out...

Thanks for the pointer to Comment Notify :) I've been emailing anyone who leaves me a message here - but I probably should have comment notify enabled.
